  • 1859 North Ormesby Hospital is founded. In the first year, 55 inpatients and 490 outpatients are treated; total operating costs £446. North Riding Infirmary to be build by the Middlesbrough Ironmasters, Under the leadership of Mr. Bolckow.

  • 1925 North Riding Infirmary opens- it has cost £7,685 to build. The first house surgeon is Dr Ellerton.

  • 1926 Dr Veitch comes to the infirmary, which is described as being near to green fields and pastures.

  • 1927 572 inpatients and 2007 outpatients are treated during the year.

  • 1928 The Infirmary is connected to the Northern Telephone system.

  • 1929 New operating theatre and lift opened on the first floor.

  • 1930 Two new awards and reception rooms are opened. Plans for More wards to celebrate Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.

  • 1899 Diamond Jubilee Wing opens at a cost of £6146.

  • 1931 Six memorial stones are laid on July 12.

  • 1932 Sir Bernard Sammuelson Wing and administrative block opens.

  • 1933 1911 Sir Francis Sammuelson opens new operating theatre on the ground floor (now ENT theatres).

  • 1925 Nurses' rooms on the first floor are converted to a new children's ward. The nurses' home transfers to new villas in the Park Road. Money for all the above works was raised through major donations from the Iron and Steel companies, such as Dorman long, Sammuelson's and the North East Steel Company. Special fund-raising events were also held, including a Town Hall Bazaar, Tykes Concert Party, a Choir Sunday in Stewart park and a massive horse, cycle and motor parade.

  • 1946 A report on the region's hospital services by Sir Hugh loft suggests consideration be given to developing special departments within existing hospitals. Ear, Nose, Throat and Eye services are recommended for the North Riding Infirmary. The years from 1940 to '46 have proved financially stressful: an operating deficit of £25560 has been accumulated.

  • 1948 On April 1, the North Riding Infirmary ceases to be a voluntary hospital as the National Health Service commences.

  • 1949/50. 64 beds are allotted to ENT, 48 to Eyes.

  • 1962 Mr. R. M. Marshall, the consultant surgeon, and his wife, opens Extensions to the children's ward.

  • 1962 Baroness Masham of Ilton, Countess of Swinton, opens New ophthalmic theatres.

  • 1992 Upgrading of Wards 1 and 2.

  • 2004 North Riding Infirmary and Middlesbrough General Hospital to be replaced by single site development.
