SUB-REGIONAL CENTRE FOR OTOLARYNGOLOGY AND HEAD AND NECK SURGERY
The ENT Department of the North Riding Infirmary has provided a
specialist service to a population of over 600,000 patients for many
years. The academic reputation of the unit has developed in association
with this service commitment. An early milestone was the establishment of
the rotation of a Senior Registrar with Ninewells Hospital, University of
Dundee. The later establishment of a further Registrar and Senior
Registrar rotation with the Freeman Hospital has complemented this. In the
early 1980s the development of CO2 laser surgery techniques at the North
Riding Infirmary led to the first publications from the unit and hosting
of international conferences and training sessions. Recent years have seen
a literary output to compare with most University departments, with
national and international recognition through presentations to major
conferences and the establishment of first-class research facilities. The
fundraising work of the North Riding Infirmary Research Foundation (ENTER)
has made a major contribution. The following pages document departmental
publications, examination successes for our trainees, notable distinctions
for senior staff and participation in ENT conferences. As Academic
Chairman I find it especially gratifying that all the senior members of
the department are contributing equally to the postgraduate work of the
unit. A league table of published research presented at the BAOC,
Manchester ranked us in eleventh place for publications nationally and the
top scoring non-teaching hospital ENT unit for the five years 1990-1994.
We must maintain this standard.
